The project
The SUSTOUR-MED (Sustainable Tourism training for the Mediterranean region) - number project 2021-2-EL01-KA210-VET-000048093, project targets current and future tourism professionals in two Mediterranean regions (Peloponnese and Sicily), in order to increase their capacity on green and digital skills. The aim is to transform the Mediterranean tourism ecosystem towards a more sustainable tourism model.
Tourism is one of the major industries of the EU and so, one of the most important sectors to be aligned with the European Green Deal. Especially in the case of the targeted regions (Korinthia in the Peloponnese, Greece and Messina in Sicily, Italy), they share similarities in both the environmental context and culture, tourism plays a very significant role in their economy. Moreover, both regions have been facing the consequences of the climate crisis as well as the negative effects of covid-19 on tourism. So, SUSTOUR-MED meets the need of actors in the tourism and hospitality industry, to be educated, trained and empowered to proceed with adaptations and initiatives that can transform the operation of the tourism sector towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly model.
Objectives
- Upskill current and future tourism professionals on green and digital skills towards sustainable tourism transformation;
- Help tourism professionals and students understand the environmental impact of their choices;
- Support SMEs & local authorities in the development/promotion of sustainable destinations;
- Raise awareness of the advantages of sustainable tourism for businesses, the community and the environment;
- Offer concrete examples and increase the uptake of existing practices for VET trainers and educators.
Our Goal to produce four outputs
SUSTOUR-MED good practices on sustainable tourism as an OER. Using these practices, businesses and public authorities are able to develop/promote more environmentally sustainable destinations. This helps future and present tourism professionals understand the impact of their choices on the environment and how to support a more resilient tourism industry. Through the systemic dissemination of practices by the partners, raise awareness about the advantages of sustainable tourism in the spheres of business, community, and environment. Also encourage stakeholders to invest in the upskilling and reskilling of their employees.

Green Village - Applicant - Greece
Green Village is a tourism SME, founded in 1994 in the seaside town of Xylokastro, in the Peloponnese. It offers a “community-like” accommodation experience as it is comprised of 20 independent villas inside a Mediterranean garden full of indigenous plants and trees and has been providing its services to hundreds of thousands of guests and visitors. Apart from the regular tourism and hospitality services GV has always been focusing on the organisation of events and initiatives related to sustainable regional development, culture, community building, and education. These initiatives play an important role in the cultural life of Xylokastro. The last few years the Green Village management team has placed its focus on implementing approaches, trainings and practices related to sustainable tourism. Both the overall structure of the hotel premises and its brand name offer great potential on evolving and transforming GV into a hub for sustainable development for the whole region.
